Whitehead-Stokes Society

Our Mission

The Whitehead-Stokes Society is a charitable organization dedicated to honoring the community spirit which has defined a century of extraordinary healthcare in Rowan County and to advance that healthcare for generations to come.

What is Whitehead-Stokes?

Organized healthcare in Rowan County can be traced to the small western Rowan community of Millbridge in October, 1894. There, Dr. John Whitehead performed the county’s first successful abdominal surgery in an unfinished house. That experience left Dr. Whitehead determined to build our area’s first hospital.

Dr. Whitehead found a partner in Baltimore-based doctor James Ernest Stokes and in 1899, the Whitehead-Stokes Sanatorium opened, beginning what would become a century of quality healthcare in Rowan County.

Through the years, remarkable partnerships have defined our community and its healthcare. The Whitehead-Stokes Society is a celebration of those partnerships.

Now is your chance to become a Charter Member of a group that honors our distinguished past while working toward an even brighter future for healthcare.
